I’d love to but…
A common concern of sewists is how hard it is to understand written instructions in commercial sewing patterns. There is a very good reason for this – to save time and print-space the pattern company assumes that the sewer already understands basic sewing rules, terms and skills. They assume that you already know terms such as staystitching and understitching, and that you have learned sewing skills like taut sewing, sewing zippers and sewing elastic. But, if this knowledge is not part of your repertoire, take heart!
Sewing skills can be learned!
Sewing is a really rewarding skill that, just like riding a bike, can be learned by practically anybody with the desire. Some people have the mistaken belief that sewing is a talent. Not so!
Are you familiar with the old Maybelline make-up ad? Let me paint a picture for you. A beautiful woman walks past two other women. One of the other women, noticing the lady’s beauty, turns to her friend and says, “Maybe she’s born with it.” And the friend replies, “Maybe it’s Maybelline.” In other words, maybe the model’s beauty simply came from learning the rules and skill of applying make-up.
Sewing is sort of like that. It isn’t a talent with which you were born; it’s a skill that can be developed, and with practice, polished to the point where it simply gives the impression that it is a talent.
Smart sewists don’t struggle alone.
You look for support. Don’t you? … Someone to cheer you on … A helpful place from which to build a good foundation of knowledge. This is where Sewing Tutorials comes in.
